The Fragrance Wheel
Have you ever used the fragrance wheel to purchase a new scent? Many of us use our sense of smell to determine if we like a perfume or aftershave, but the fragrance wheel allows us to see which fragrance notes sit in which category. Michael Edwards, a leading fragrance expert and consultant, created the fragrance wheel.
In 1983, he developed the fragrance wheel, a visual representation for categorising and classifying different fragrances based on their dominant scent characteristics, that would make it easier to find a scent in a specific category.
Michael Edwards is well-known for his extensive knowledge of fragrance and expertise in the perfume industry. His creation of the fragrance wheel has become a widely used tool in the world of perfumery, helping both professionals and consumers understand and appreciate the diverse range of scents available in the market.

The wheel is divided into four primary fragrance families or categories, further subdivided into subcategories. Each section represents a different type of scent, and the relationships between the sections indicate how similar or dissimilar the fragrances are.
Perfume creation is a meticulous and artistic process that involves blending various aromatic ingredients to craft a harmonious and appealing scent.
Floral: This is the largest category and includes fragrances that primarily feature the scents of flowers. It is further divided into subcategories like Floral White (white flowers such as jasmine, tuberose, and lily of the valley), Floral Green (green and natural-smelling floral notes), and Floral Woody Musk (floral notes combined with woody and musky elements).
Oriental: This category is characterised by warm, exotic, and sensual scents. It is divided into Oriental Soft (light and powdery), Oriental Floral (floral with an oriental base), and Oriental Woody (woody with an oriental base).
Woody: Fragrances in this family feature predominantly woody scents. It includes subcategories like Woody Earthy (earthy and mossy), Woody Fresh (woody with a fresh and citrus touch), and Woody Oriental (woody with oriental base notes).
Fresh: This category consists of crisp, clean, and refreshing scents. It includes subcategories like Aromatic Fougère (herbal and fern-like scents), Citrus (citrus-based scents), and Water (aquatic and marine scents).
These four main categories can be further divided into more specific subcategories, comprehensively representing different fragrance types. The fragrance wheel helps consumers and perfume professionals understand a fragrance’s aromatic composition and find scents that suit their preferences.
Fragrance creators and marketers also use the fragrance wheel to identify market gaps and trends, allowing them to develop new and innovative perfumes that cater to different consumer preferences.
The fragrance wheel also aids in creating harmonious blends by identifying complementary scents from different categories.
However, it’s essential to note that the fragrance wheel is just a guide, and some fragrances may not fit neatly into a specific category. Perfumes often feature a combination of scents from various families, making them unique and distinctive.
Nonetheless, the fragrance wheel remains valuable in the perfume industry, facilitating communication and understanding among enthusiasts and professionals.
As a distributor for a perfume company called FM World UK, I have used the fragrance wheel on many occasions to help potential customers choose the right scent, especially if they want to try something new.
Photo ©️fragranceswithlove.com Photo ©️fragranceswithlove.com Sometimes, we don’t automatically recognise which family a particular scent falls into, so with the FM World wheel, we have a male and female side. There is an inner wheel with an arrow that can be moved to a designated fragrance family, and then, within that selection, we can see which perfume numbers fall within that fragrance family.
It is also worth remembering that trying a perfume sample before purchasing is best to ensure it suits your skin type and occasion.
The Evolution and Art of Fragrance: From Ancient Rituals to Modern Perfumery
Fragrances, perfumes or scents have been essential to human culture for thousands of years. These aromatic compositions are created to evoke pleasant sensations and stimulate our olfactory senses.
Fragrances significantly enhance our identity, express emotions, and create lasting impressions on others. Many of us have been wearing fragrances from an early age, and some, like myself, may have experimented with garden flowers when we were younger.

The history of fragrances dates back to ancient civilisations like Egypt, Mesopotamia and India, where aromatic oils and natural ingredients were used for religious rituals, therapeutic purposes and beautification.
As trade and cultural exchanges flourished, the art of perfumery spread to Greece and Rome, becoming an essential part of their societies.
Creating a fragrance, known as perfumery, involves blending various aromatic compounds to achieve an appealing and balanced scent.
Perfumers combine essential oils, aromatic extracts, synthetic molecules, and other ingredients to craft unique fragrances with different notes and accords.

These notes are categorised into three main types: top notes, middle notes (also known as heart notes) and base notes. The relationship of these notes over time creates the fragrance’s overall character and longevity.
Top notes are the initial, brief and temporary scents you smell immediately after applying a fragrance. They are light and refreshing, often derived from citrus fruits or other bright and zesty elements.
Middle notes emerge after the top notes disappear and form the fragrance’s heart. They create the theme and personality of the scent, which can be floral, spicy, woody, or other distinctive accords.
Base notes are the foundation of the fragrance and provide depth and longevity. They typically contain rich, robust ingredients like wood, musk, or vanilla. These notes will be the scent that lasts the longest in your perfume or aftershave and sits on the skin for the longest time.
Fragrances can be classified into several categories, such as floral, oriental, woody, citrus, and gourmand. Each category has unique characteristics that suit different occasions, seasons, and personal preferences.
Over time, fragrances have evolved, and perfumers continue to explore new ingredients and innovative techniques to create captivating scents.
The fragrance industry has also expanded to include various product forms, such as Eau de parfum, eau de toilette, cologne, body sprays and scented lotions, catering to every individual’s needs.
Beyond personal use, fragrances have found their way into other industries, such as aromatherapy, where certain scents are believed to have therapeutic effects on mood and emotions.
Additionally, fragrances are used in household products, like candles and air fresheners, to create pleasant living spaces.

Psychology Of Perfume
Let’s take a deeper look at the psychology of perfume. This website has discussed many fragrance topics, from choosing the right scent to the best places on the skin to wear it.
Psychology has always interested me. We usually associate it with studying behaviour and the mind, including understanding why we do what we do and how our thoughts and feelings are processed.
But what about how a perfume scent makes us feel? Many of us wear perfume or cologne daily, and there’s a reason why we do it. It makes us happy, content, desirable, clean, and fresh. This fascinating study area explores the powerful effects of fragrance scents on human emotions, behaviour, and perception.
Perfumes have been used for centuries, including religious rituals, personal grooming, and status symbols.
Today, the fragrance industry is a multi-billion-dollar market driven by the psychological impact of scents on individuals and their social interactions. Scents can make a huge difference in everyone’s life, so let’s delve into some of the critical aspects of perfume psychology.
Psychology of Perfume
We know that when we sniff a particular fragrance, the scent can trigger emotional and memory associations. Perhaps you wore a particular perfume for your wedding, or a specific scent that a family member once wore triggers a memory of a loved one who has passed. Smells are directly connected to the limbic system, the emotional control centre of our brains. It’s the part of the brain responsible for emotions and memory.

Certain scents can evoke nostalgia, joy, relaxation, or negative emotions based on the experiences associated with those smells. For example, the scent of a particular flower might remind someone of their childhood or a specific event.
Additionally, the scent of peppermint is often associated with increased alertness and improved concentration, which is why it’s sometimes used in settings where focus and attention are essential, such as work or study.
Perfumes can influence our mood and emotional state. Certain scents, such as lavender or chamomile, are known for their calming and relaxing effects, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. A key factor in today’s demanding world is that many of us experience high levels of stress and anxiety.
Fragrances can be used as a means of emotional regulation. Some individuals may intentionally wear a particular scent to boost their confidence before an important event or soothe their nerves in stressful situations.
This association between scent and emotional states can create a comforting and familiar foundation for dealing with the demands of today’s fast-paced world.
In previous years, perfumes and fragrances were often manufactured with the idea that certain scents were more suitable for either men or women. However, in recent times, there has been a significant increase in the popularity of unisex fragrances, blurring the lines of traditional gender-specific scents.
Moreover, citrus or fruit-based scents are known for their uplifting qualities and ability to promote happiness and energy. I enjoy fragrances with fruit notes as they contribute to my overall well-being. These scents feel like sunshine on my skin, and when I catch a whiff of them, I instantly feel uplifted and happy.
Many of us have heard of signature scents; perfumes can be crucial in expressing individuality and defining our identity.
We choose fragrances that align with our personality or the image we want to project to the world. Some prefer floral scents because of their femininity, while others like wood or musk notes to express strength and sensuality. Each of us is unique, so our scent will be too.

The smell of perfume plays a significant role in human attraction and sensuality. Pheromones are chemical signals that animals (including humans) release that can influence mate selection and attraction.
Although the effects of pheromones in humans are still debated, certain fragrances are marketed as having aphrodisiac qualities, aiming to enhance attractiveness and allure.
You can see a collection here at FM World, where we have our range of pheromone fragrances for men and women. The psychology of perfume is also evident in how we perceive and interact with luxury brands.
Unsurprisingly, many of us are drawn to higher-priced perfumes, but it’s not because of their price tag. Celebrities, such as Harry Styles and Rihanna, significantly influence us, and we enjoy following the lives of particular stars. Purchasing a scent our favourite celebrity wears or has endorsed makes us feel closer to them.
Companies are also clever in marketing perfumes and cologne. They design and position fragrances to align with their brand image and target audience.
For instance, a sports brand might create a fresh and invigorating scent to appeal to active individuals. In contrast, a luxury fashion brand may choose a more sophisticated and elegant fragrance to reflect its identity.
Each of these will impact the purchaser. If you have ever been into a large department store such as Debenhams, you will have noticed a specific counter full of fragrances and an assistant poised, ready to spray you as you walk past.
It’s worth remembering that these extra details are just a snippet of what we pay when purchasing high-end perfumes such as Chanel, Baccarat Rouge and Creed.
The scent can often be smelled when you walk into a large store as it wafts in every direction, encouraging the shopper to investigate the smell. Retailers know which fragrances to select for the most significant impact during that particular season or time of year, such as Christmas.
High-end perfumes often come with a higher price tag, creating a perception of exclusivity and sophistication. The scent can evoke a sense of luxury and prestige, influencing how people view the brand and its products.
Through this website, we have learned that affordable fragrances are just as luxurious as the top-end expensive brands, and we should go with what we can afford and what suits our skin type.
Our individual experiences can influence perfume scent. Some scents may be more appealing for specific events, such as weddings, where a more delicate fragrance is suitable, especially where many attend.
No one wants an overpowering fragrance that diminishes the beauty of the day. For a more relaxed event, such as an evening out and perhaps during the winter, stronger scents work very well and are often more suitable for making an impact.
It’s no secret that perfumes play a big part in aromatherapy. This form of alternative medicine is hugely popular and utilizes the psychological impact of scents to promote well-being and address specific health issues.
Many people try to avoid taking medication, so while essential oils should not replace medical treatment, certain oils and fragrances are believed to have therapeutic effects.
I am alleviating stress, calming the mind, or improving sleep quality. Lavender is very popular for helping those who suffer from difficulty sleeping.

It’s essential to recognize that we all react differently to perfumes; the individual will find the perfume that most suits them and the occasion.
The psychology of perfume is a complex and intricate field, blending biology, psychology, culture and personal experiences to understand the profound influence that scents can have on our emotions and behaviours.
Perfumes are such an uplifting experience for both men and women. They bring us the joy hundreds of scents can bring us as individuals.

Conclusion
The psychology of perfume is a complex field that delves into human behaviour, emotions, marketing strategies, and sensory experiences. How we respond to scents is deeply ingrained in our souls, making perfumes a powerful tool for shaping emotions, memories, and social interactions.

Floating Candles
Floating candles are trendy and have gained widespread popularity for various reasons. They create a visually stunning display that captures our attention when they give off a calm glow.
The reflection from the water creates a mesmerising atmosphere, similar to gazing into an open fire.
They are a popular choice for adding a touch of elegance to any home or for table decorations at special occasions and events.
Floating candles
Floating candles are very versatile, too, besides being used for occasions such as weddings or dinner parties.
They can also add relaxation when taking a bath and help calm the mind. They can also be used as table decorations for a romantic dinner for two to create a cosy atmosphere. They are straightforward to use and require minimal effort to set up.
Your chosen candles can be placed in any water-filled container, such as a bowl or clear vase, and they will instantly create a beautiful display. One reason floating candles are so popular is their accessibility and affordability. They can be found in local stores, online, and in candle shops, and they have a variety of candles available.
Floating candles offer endless decorative possibilities. If you were to search for decorative floating candles, you would see how they can be combined with other elements such as flowers, petals, or decorative accents to create stunning centrepieces or Tablescapes. This has become a new trend, where your table combines tableware, centrepieces, and decorations.
This versatility allows individuals to customise the look and feel of their displays according to their style or the specific event theme. They look stunning whenever you attend a function such as a wedding, and they set a beautiful scene for a fantastic event. They add a touch of elegance to any occasion and everyday moments when we want to relax and switch off. We all strive for quality time for our health and emotional well-being.
There is also a symbolic meaning associated with tranquillity, spirituality and reflection when we use floating candles. Many people appreciate the more profound significance and the sense of calm they evoke. As a result, floating candles are used in rituals, ceremonies and cultural festivals to represent purification, renewal or remembrance.
How do they work
Floating candles are designed to float on the surface of water. They are typically made of materials that are lighter than water, such as wax or other floating substances.
This buoyant nature allows the candles to stay afloat and move effortlessly with the gentle water movement. It’s very relaxing to watch as they bob gently on the water.

12 White Unscented Floating Candles
They have a wick embedded in the centre, in the same way as traditional candles.
The wick is typically made of cotton or another combustible material that can absorb the melted wax and act as a fuel source. When the wick is lit, the flame’s heat melts the surrounding wax, creating liquid fuel for the flame to sustain itself.
As the floating candle burns, the flame’s heat melts the wax. The liquid wax is then drawn up in the wick through capillary action, vaporising and consuming it by flame, creating a continuous cycle of fuel supply. The burning process is controlled, and the flame remains steady as long as sufficient wax is drawn up the wick.
How to Burn Your Floating Candle
Floating candles are designed to maintain stability while burning on the water’s surface. The base of the candle is usually broader or flat to prevent the candle from tipping over. Additionally, the water acts as a cooling agent, which helps reduce the risk of the flame spreading or causing accidents.
Safety
As with all candles, never leave them unattended. Keep them away from flammable materials and ensure they are placed in containers deep enough to prevent the flame from reaching the bottom or sides of the container. Following these guidelines will ensure you can enjoy the candles to the fullest. Floating candles make lovely gifts, too.
Scented and unscented
Floating candles can be scented, but not all candles have a fragrance. The availability of scented floating candles depends on the specific product and brand you choose.
Large Floating Candles – unscented
Scented floating candles are typically made by infusing the wax with fragrance or essential oils during manufacturing. When the candle is lit, the heat releases the scent, creating a pleasant aroma in the surrounding area.
If you specifically want scented floating candles, it’s essential to check the product description or packaging to ensure they are indeed scented. Some floating candles may have a specific scent mentioned, such as lavender, vanilla, or citrus, while others may be unscented.
8+ HOUR PREMIUM REUSABLE FLOATING CANDLES
Remember that the scent of floating candles, mainly when used in larger spaces or outdoors, may be more subtle than that of other scented candle options, such as candles you would burn in a jar.
However, they can still contribute to the overall sensory experience and add a touch of fragrance to the ambience.
If you prefer a more potent aroma, there are other options available that you can consider. Use scented oils, wax melts, or diffusers alongside unscented floating candles to enhance the scent in the air. This allows you to customise the fragrance while enjoying the floating candles’ visual beauty.
FLOATING CANDLES 4 PACK DAISY GLITTER
Floating candles come in various sizes and shapes to suit different preferences and purposes. Common shapes include round, oval, or flower-like designs. The sizes can range from small tea light-sized candles to larger, more substantial ones that can create a dramatic effect.
The burn time of floating candles can vary depending on their size, composition and quality. Smaller floating candles may burn for a few hours, while larger ones can burn for several hours or even up to 10 or more hours.
Check the packaging or description of your floating candle before your purchase to ensure you have the most suitable candle for your needs.
Conclusion
The combination of their visual appeal, versatility, ease of use, affordability, and symbolism contributes to the popularity of floating candles among individuals who seek to create a captivating and serene atmosphere in their surroundings.

Recycle Candles Into Wax Melts
We are very much into recycling many household items these days, and recycling candles into wax melts is a great way to repurpose leftover candle wax and reduce waste.
We all like to do our bit for the environment, so by being creative and reusing candle wax, we not only find ourselves a new hobby but can also reproduce another popular home item.
Candles are bought for many occasions, and we often find that certain types of candles burn unevenly, leaving a lot of leftover wax around the sides of the container. Many candles have been ‘tunnelled’, and the leftover wax and its containers have been thrown away.

By reading my article on reusing candle jars, you can use your creativity and reuse any ones you have at home.
Wax melts have gained popularity over the years, so let’s look at why.
Recycle Candles Into Wax Melts
Scented Ambiance
Wax melts are known for creating a pleasant and inviting atmosphere. I love to walk into my clients’ homes and smell a burning candle; others comment on the scent in my house.
When melted, wax melts release aromatic fragrances, filling the space with delightful scents, and can enhance the mood, create a relaxing ambience, or add a touch of luxury to any room. They’re also good for eliminating pet and food smells.
Safety
Compared to traditional candles that are lit, wax melts are considered a safer option because they don’t have an open flame.
They are typically used with electric or tea light wax warmers, which provide a controlled heat source for melting the wax and eliminate the risk of fire hazards. They are a popular choice, especially for those who have pets and small children. I use the tea light options, as I find the flame relaxing to watch when it’s nearby.
Easy to Use
Wax melts are convenient to use. They come in small, compact shapes or cubes that are easy to handle and store. Place a wax melt or two into a wax warmer, turn it on, and wait for the fragrance to fill the air.
Alternatively, light a tea light candle and watch the wax melt. You won’t have to worry about trimming wicks or cleaning up melted wax.
Longevity
Wax melts have a longer lifespan compared to traditional candles. I was amazed by how long they lasted. I have only used 3 or 4 cubes so far from my pack. Each wax melt can provide hours of fragrance before it needs to be replaced, making them more cost-effective in the long run. You can enjoy the scent for an extended period without frequently purchasing new melts.
Variety of Scents
Many scents are available online at places such as eBay and FM World. Whether you prefer floral, fruity, woody, or seasonal fragrances, a wax melt is available to suit your taste. At FM, there are also options for buying wax melts to match your favourite perfume.
FM World Pure Home wax melts. Wax melt holder for tea lights Customisation
Another reason for their popularity is the ability to mix and match different wax melts. Many enjoy creating unique scents by combining melts in their wax warmers, and this is an excellent idea for those who wish to be creative and personalise their preferences.
Decorative Appeal
Wax melts often have attractive designs and colours, making them visually pleasing. Some people enjoy displaying wax melts as decorative items even when not used.
Items Required For Recycling Candles Into Wax Melts
Materials
Used candles or candle wax remnants
A double boiler or a heatproof container and a saucepan
Wax melt moulds or silicone ice cube trays
Wickless candle wicks (optional)
Fragrance oils or essential oils (optional)
Stirring utensil (metal spoon or wooden stick)
Wax paper or parchment paper
Preparing the candle wax
Start by collecting used candles or candle wax remnants from existing candles or wax melt containers. Remove any metal wicks, labels, or debris from the wax.
As we mentioned, if you have different-coloured or scented candle wax, you can combine them to create unique wax melts. Otherwise, you can use one type of wax for a consistent fragrance.
Melt the wax
Set up a double boiler (if you have one) by filling a saucepan halfway with water and placing a heatproof container on top. Alternatively, you can use a heatproof container directly on low heat. Be careful not to overheat, as this could burn the wax.
Break the candle wax into small pieces or use a cheese grater to shred it. This will speed up the melting time and help melt it evenly.
Place the wax pieces or shreds into the top double boiler or heatproof container. Slowly heat the water or container until the wax has melted completely, stirring occasionally.
Add fragrance
Another great option is to add your desired scent and fragrance oils or essential oils, which can be added to your melted wax for scented wax melts. Follow the recommended usage rates the oil manufacturer provides for the best results.
Stir the fragrance/essential oil into the melted wax thoroughly to ensure an even distribution.
Pour the melted wax
Prepare your wax melt moulds or silicone ice cube trays. Place them on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Place candle wicks in the centre of each mould if you’re using candle wicks.
Slowly pour the melted wax into the moulds, filling them to a safe level. Be careful not to overfill, as this will prevent spillages and make it easier to remove the wax melts later.
If you’re not using wickless candle wicks, you can pour the melted wax directly into the moulds without additional preparation.
Allow the wax melts to cool and solidify.
Let the wax melts sit undisturbed for several hours or until completely cooled and solidified. The time needed will depend on the size and thickness of your creations.
Remove the wax melts.
Once the wax melts have hardened, gently pop them out of the moulds. If they don’t come out quickly, you can briefly freeze the moulds to make removal easier.
Store and use your homemade wax melts.
Place the wax melts in a container or storage bag, ensuring they are tightly sealed to retain their fragrance.
To use the wax melts, place one or more in a wax melt warmer or an electric wax warmer, following the instructions provided with the device and enjoy the beautiful scents and ambience created by YOU!

Refillable Candles
Refillable candles are a creative way to enjoy your favourite scents without adding to the piles of empty glass jars we usually toss out. Unlike traditional candles, these allow you to keep the container while replacing only the wax or filling, offering a genius mix of eco-friendliness and design.
Additionally, refillable candles allow you to experiment with different wax types that might burn cleaner or longer than store-bought options, refining your candle-burning experience.
Here’s an improved version of your paragraph with better flow:
I love the idea of refilling candles. There is so much waste when we throw away candles that have burned down, leaving us with an empty jar or container. By reusing what we already have, we can make such a difference.
Choosing refillable candles is like swapping fast fashion for timeless classics in your home decor. They cut down on waste and are planet—and wallet-friendly. Who doesn’t love a two-in-one deal? Plus, it’s a great DIY project that’s fun and kind to the Earth.
Moreover, you can align your choice of candles with sustainable living goals, particularly if you’re mindful of your carbon footprint or prefer eco-conscious home decor.
Going green with refillable candles isn’t just a trend; it’s becoming mainstream. With more people clued into sustainability, these candles are gaining popularity for their charm and practicality. From apartment dwellers to prominent families, everyone’s hopping on board.

Refillables also offer a chic solution for those who are into minimalism or wish to avoid clutter. With just a few containers, you can rotate scents seasonally without the guilt of throwing away packaging.
Refillables go beyond being eco-conscious; they offer a sense of creativity in customisation. You get to play designer, choosing everything from the scent to the colour of your candle, making them functional and a personal statement piece.
Many candle enthusiasts also enjoy the flexibility of matching the aesthetic of their candles to different interior designs, helping to create specific moods or themes in their living spaces.
How to Make Your Refillable Candles: A Step-by-Step Guide
Making your refillable candles can be a fun and rewarding project that suits both newbies and seasoned DIYers. The essential ingredients are a good base oil or wax, a wick, some fragrance or essential oils, and a suitable container. Soy wax is famous for its clean burn, but you can explore other options, like beeswax or coconut wax.
Affiliate DisclosureWhen you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, the eBay partner network.Your old candle jars work just fine as containers. Please make sure they’re clean and free from any leftover wax residue. If you don’t have any old jars, use any heat-resistant containers. Mason jars or cute teacups can give your handmade creations a quirky touch. Even vintage glassware or small metal tins can make your candle unique, adding a personalised flair to each piece.
Pouring your candles is all about control and timing. Melt your wax over a double boiler until it’s a smooth liquid. Once it’s cool enough but still pourable, add your chosen fragrance. Stir well and pour slowly into your chosen container while keeping the wick straight and centered.
Patience is your best friend as the wax cools and sets, which might take several hours. Once everything’s solid, trim the wick to about a quarter inch. Voilà! You’ve just crafted a beautiful refillable candle to light up your space. Not only does the final result provide ambience, but handmade candles can also be excellent, thoughtful gifts.
Ensuring Safety and Longevity in Refillable Candles
Safety is a top priority when using refillable candles at home, so following simple steps is crucial. Always ensure your candles sit on a stable, heat-resistant surface, far from flammable items like curtains or papers. This simple step can prevent those little mishaps from escalating. Regularly inspecting your candles for cracks or signs of wear in the container can help avoid accidents, too.
Burning a candle might seem straightforward, but some art is involved. Trim your wick to about a quarter-inch before each use, as this will help avoid smoke and ensure an even burn. Also, keep the candle away from drafts to maintain an even flame. No one likes a candle that melts unevenly, right?
When treated well, refillable candles can last a long time, but their lifespan is affected by the type of wax or refill material you use. Soy wax, for example, is long-lasting, giving you more delightful hours of light. If you’re using other types, like beeswax, remember that each has its own burning time.
You may even find that certain waxes are better suited to different occasions, like beeswax, which is suitable for special events due to its slow, radiant burn.
Choosing quality materials is crucial for keeping your candle safe and efficient. Stick with natural wicks and waxes as much as possible to ensure a clean burn. Avoid materials that could release toxins when heated. You’ll have peace of mind along with your cosy glow. Natural wicks made from cotton or wood offer additional eco-friendly benefits and may enhance the overall burning experience.

Customising the Scent: Crafting the Perfect Aroma in Refillable Candles
Creating a signature scent for your refillable candles is where the magic truly happens. Whether you’re into calming lavender or vibrant citrus, there’s a fragrance waiting for its spotlight in your home. Essential and fragrance oils are your best friends, offering unique profiles and benefits.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even layer scents to create multi-dimensional aromas that evolve as the candle burns, adding a surprise element to your experience.
Essential oils are the way to go if you’re after a natural vibe. They offer pure, plant-based aromas and bring aromatherapy into the mix. Think eucalyptus for relaxation or peppermint for invigoration. Be generous yet cautious; some fragrances may be potent, so adjust according to preference to maintain balance.
Fragrance oils offer a broader spectrum of smells and are typically more affordable. They’re synthesised to replicate scents that are hard to extract naturally. Do you love the idea of a warm vanilla-baked cookie scent without the hassle of baking? Fragrance oils can deliver just that.
For seasonal or holiday-specific scents, fragrance oils give you a wide range to experiment with, from pumpkin spice in autumn to fresh pine during the winter holidays.
Blending oils can be fun and let you create multi-layered aromas. Mix complementary scents like lemon, basil, cedarwood, and bergamot to find what uniquely defines your space. A little experimenting can go a long way in enhancing your atmosphere. These scents affect the mood, and when made with natural ingredients, they can also improve indoor air quality.

Making Your Own Candles
Most homes, including my own, have candles. Many are bought from shops or online, but there are several reasons why making your candles can be a rewarding and worthwhile project.
It doesn’t matter what season we are in; candles are an added accessory to the home that can bring us warmth, joy, and peace. Many candles are available to purchase nowadays, and prices range from very low to expensive, so we thought we would consider making your own candles.
Handmade candles can be infused with petals, crystals and essential oils. Seven Reasons Why You Should Make Your Own Candles
Creative Expression: Making your candles allows you to unleash your creativity. You can choose the wax, fragrances, colours, and container styles that align with your personal preferences and home decor.
You can experiment with combinations to create unique and customised candles that reflect your individuality. If you’ve ever looked on Pinterest, you’ll find some beautiful ideas for making candles.
Cost-Effective: DIY candle making can be a cost-effective alternative to purchasing commercially made candles. Buying the necessary materials in bulk can save money in the long run.
Additionally, homemade candles make great gifts for family and friends, saving you from buying expensive store-bought presents.
So many people buy expensive candles and never burn them because they feel it wastes money. Keeping a candle unlit means you won’t appreciate the scent captured within the wax and smell its fragrance.
Quality Control: When you make your candles, you have complete control over the quality of the ingredients. You can choose natural and eco-friendly waxes like soy or beeswax, which are renewable resources and emit fewer toxins than petroleum-based candles.
You can also select high-quality fragrances or essential oils to ensure a pleasant scent without harmful additives- ideal for anyone in your household who enjoys the smell of candles but suffers from the toxins when burning.
Customisation: One significant advantage of making your candles is the ability to customise them according to your preferences.
You can create candles with specific scents, colours, and container styles to match moods, occasions, or seasons. The possibilities are endless, whether you want calming lavender candles for relaxation or festive cinnamon-scented candles for the holidays.
Therapeutic and Relaxing: Making candles can be therapeutic and relaxing. It allows you to slow down, focus on the present moment, and engage in a mindful activity. The aroma and warm glow of candles can create a soothing ambience, promoting relaxation and stress relief in your home—something we all strive for, especially in these times.
Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly: Making your candles can contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle. Using natural waxes, reusable containers, and eco-friendly materials reduces your environmental impact compared to buying disposable or heavily packaged candles.
You can also recycle or upcycle containers and repurpose old candles, minimising waste. I love doing this and have used many candleholders to create new things around my home, like turning them into plant pots, flower vases, pen holders, and more. This topic is huge in the world now, and we should all do our bit to help the environment.

Sense of Accomplishment: Making something with your hands can be incredibly fulfilling. Seeing your finished candles, enjoying their fragrance, and basking in the soft glow can give you a sense of pride and accomplishment.
It’s a tangible result of your creativity and effort, just like when you were at school and made something from scratch. It’s a wonderful feeling when we have created something ourselves.
Overall, making your candles allows you to personalise your living space, save money, control the quality of ingredients, engage in a satisfying and creative hobby, and be a rewarding activity.

Making your candles, ingredients, and tools
1. Buy your materials:
– Candle wax (such as soy wax, beeswax, or paraffin wax)
– Candle wicks
– Containers (glass jars, tins, or moulds)
– Wick stickers or hot glue
– Wick holders (pencil, clothespin, or chopstick)
– Fragrance oils or essential oils (optional)
– Dyes or colourants (optional)
– Thermometer
– A double boiler or a heat-safe container and a saucepan
– Stirring utensil (metal spoon or wooden skewer)
– Heat-resistant surface or newspaper
– Scissors
2. Prepare your containers:
– Clean and dry your containers thoroughly.
– If you’re using glass jars, ensure they are heat-resistant to prevent cracking.
3. Attach the wicks:
– Use a wick sticker or a small amount of hot glue to secure the wick at the bottom centre of the container.
– Place a wick holder across the top of the container to keep the wick central and straight.
4. Melt the wax:
– Set up a double boiler by filling a saucepan with water and placing a heat-safe container on top. Alternatively, use a heat-safe container directly on a saucepan.
– Cut the wax into small chunks for faster melting.
– Place the wax in the top container or saucepan and heat it over medium heat until it melts completely.
– Use a thermometer to monitor the temperature and ensure it doesn’t exceed the wax’s melting point. Different waxes have different melting points.
5. Add fragrance and colour (optional):
Add fragrance or essential oils to the melted wax if you want scented candles. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended usage rate for the oil.
– Add candle dye or colourants to achieve your desired colour. Start with a small amount and adjust as needed.
6. Pour the wax:
– Allow the melted wax to cool slightly to avoid excessive heat when pouring.
– Slowly pour the melted wax into the prepared containers, careful not to disturb the wick.
– Leave some space at the top to allow for any shrinkage during cooling.
7. Cool and cure:
– Let the candles cool and solidify completely. This process may take a few hours or overnight.
– Trim the wicks to a suitable length (about ¼ inch or 0.6 cm) using scissors.
8. Clean up:
– Clean your tools and equipment while the candles are cooling. Wax can be difficult to remove once it hardens.
9. Enjoy your homemade candles:
– Once the candles have cured, they are ready to be used. Light them and enjoy the cosy ambience they create in your home.
Remember to exercise caution when working with hot wax and open flames. Always follow safety guidelines and never leave burning candles unattended.
Conclusion
The art of making candles is a rewarding experience. It allows you to tap into your creativity and create personalised and unique pieces that bring warmth and ambience to any space.
By choosing your fragrances, colours and designs, you can tailor your candles to suit your preferences or even make them thoughtful gifts for loved ones.
Making candles at home is a relatively simple process that people of all ages and skill levels can enjoy. Whether you prefer the traditional method of using beeswax or enjoy experimenting with different waxes and additives, the possibilities for creativity are endless.
Candle-making is a creative outlet that also provides a sense of relaxation and mindfulness. Melting the wax, adding fragrances, and pouring the mixture into moulds or containers can be therapeutic and meditative. Watching the candle shape and solidify over time brings a sense of accomplishment and pride.
Furthermore, making your candles allows you to control the quality of the ingredients. You can choose to use natural, non-toxic materials, ensuring a healthier and safer environment when burning the candles. Additionally, it can be a more cost-effective alternative to buying expensive candles from stores.
Making your candles is a delightful hobby that combines creativity, relaxation, and personalisation. It offers a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction as you create beautiful, fragrant candles that brighten any space. Candles That Help You Sleep
There are various reasons why some individuals may struggle to switch off for a restful night at bedtime. While many of us battle with how to fight this issue, some candles help you sleep. Here are a few common factors that can contribute to difficulty falling asleep:
1. Stress and Anxiety: High levels of stress or anxiety can make it challenging to relax and quieten the mind, making it difficult to fall asleep.
Worries, racing thoughts, or overthinking can keep the brain active when it needs to wind down. I can certainly associate with a mind that doesn’t switch off easily.
2. Poor Sleep Habits: Irregular sleep schedules, inconsistent bedtime routines, excessive screen time before bed, and consuming stimulating substances like caffeine or nicotine can disrupt the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle.
Engaging in mentally or physically stimulating activities close to bedtime can also interfere with your sleep.
3. Environmental Factors: An uncomfortable sleep environment can interfere with sleep.
Factors such as excessive noise, uncomfortable room temperature, bright lights, an uncomfortable mattress or pillow, and an uninviting bedroom can all contribute to difficulties in falling asleep.
I have to be completely silent when I go to bed. No TV is on in the background, and no noise that will interfere with my mind trying to switch off. Being too hot while trying to sleep, especially during the hotter months, can be very challenging. The fan is helpful, but it often blows the warm air around the room, thus still causing issues.
4. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions can affect sleep. Examples include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues, hormonal imbalances, and psychiatric disorders such as depression or anxiety disorders.
These conditions can disrupt sleep patterns and make it difficult to initiate sleep. In today’s world, more and more people suffer from mental issues, and this has a significant impact on our sleep patterns. Over an extended period, the damage is very hard to rectify.
5. Medications and Substances: Certain medications, such as those for allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, or psychiatric conditions, can have stimulating effects or interfere with sleep. Likewise, substances like caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol can disrupt standard sleep patterns
6. Circadian Rhythm Disorders: Disruptions to the body’s internal clock, such as jet lag, shift work, or irregular sleep-wake schedules, can interfere with the natural sleep-wake cycle, making it difficult to fall asleep at the desired time. My eldest son used to work night shifts, and when he had days off, he had to stay awake through the night to keep his sleep pattern going.
7. Psychological Factors: Mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or chronic stress can contribute to sleep difficulties. These conditions can lead to racing thoughts, emotional distress, and hyperarousal, making it challenging to relax and initiate sleep.
Identifying the underlying causes of sleep difficulties is essential to address them appropriately.
If sleep problems persist and significantly impact daily functioning, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional or a sleep specialist for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide personalised recommendations and interventions to improve sleep quality.

Candles that help you sleep
Candles can help create a soothing environment, promoting a good night’s sleep. Certain types of candles are designed to aid relaxation and improve sleep quality. Here are some types of candles that can help you achieve a restful night:
1. Lavender candles: I love this plant. Lavender is well-known for its relaxing properties and is often used in aromatherapy to promote sleep. Lighting lavender-scented candles can help create a calming atmosphere, reduce anxiety, and induce a sense of tranquillity, contributing to a better sleep experience.

2. Chamomile candles: Chamomile is another popular herb for its soothing effects. Its gentle and floral scent can help relax the mind and body, making it easier to fall asleep. Chamomile candles can create a cosy ambience that enhances relaxation before bedtime.
3. Vanilla candles: Vanilla has a comforting and sweet aroma that can create a relaxing atmosphere. The scent of vanilla candles can be calming, helping to reduce restlessness and promote a deeper, more restorative sleep.

Remember that vanilla can be sweet and sugary to the senses, and not everyone will enjoy its scent. I avoid anything with a vanilla fragrance, which gives me a headache.
4. Sandalwood candles: Sandalwood is often used in meditation due to its grounding and calming properties. Sandalwood candles’ warm and woody scent can help alleviate stress, quiet the mind, and promote peace, facilitating a more peaceful sleep.
5. Valerian candles: Valerian is a herb known for its sedative properties. Valerian-scented candles can help ease insomnia and promote relaxation. The soothing aroma of Valerian can aid in falling asleep faster and improving sleep quality.

Using Candles Safely
Ensuring safety and proper use when using candles for better sleep is essential. Combining these will help your mind switch off and settle your body, ensuring your sleep is undisturbed and relaxing.
■ Always keep candles away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.
■ Opt for candles made from natural and non-toxic materials like soy wax or beeswax.
■ Trim the wick before each use to prevent excessive smoke and ensure a clean burn.
■ Consider using candle holders or diffusers designed for safe candle usage.
■ Extinguish candles before going to bed to avoid any fire hazards.
Remember that while candles can create a relaxing ambience, they should be part of a comprehensive sleep routine.
It’s also helpful to incorporate other sleep-promoting practices, such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and practising relaxation before bedtime.
Why Are Candles So Popular?
Candles have remained popular for various reasons and are cherished by many today.
Here are some of the reasons why candles are so popular:
Ambience and Mood: Candles create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The soft, flickering light can instantly enhance the ambience of any space, whether it’s a relaxing bath, a romantic dinner, or a cosy evening at home. Candles have the power to create a soothing environment.
Aesthetics and Decor: Candles are often used as decorative items in homes, hotels, restaurants, and other spaces. They come in various shapes, sizes, and colours, allowing people to choose candles that complement their interior design or match specific themes.
Candles can add a touch of elegance, style, and personality to any room.
Celebration and Ceremonies: Candles are frequently used in festivals and ceremonies worldwide.
From birthdays and weddings to religious and spiritual rituals, candles symbolise joy, unity, and reverence. They are often associated with commemoration and can create a sense of sacredness and solemnity during significant events.
Relaxation and Meditation: Candles are commonly used during relaxation and meditation practices.
The soft, gentle light can help create a serene environment, promoting a sense of calmness and focus. Many people find lighting a candle and watching its flame therapeutic and conducive to mindfulness. I know it has this effect on me.
Aromatherapy: Scented candles have gained popularity due to their therapeutic benefits. Different fragrances, such as lavender, vanilla, or citrus, can evoke specific moods, promote relaxation, relieve stress, or energise the mind.
Scented candles allow people to enjoy the pleasing aroma while benefiting from the ambience they create.
Power Outages and Emergencies: Candles are a reliable light source during power outages or emergencies when electricity is unavailable. Having candles on hand provides a practical and functional solution, temporarily illuminating a space.
Rituals and Traditions: Candles hold significant cultural, religious, and symbolic meanings in various traditions and rituals. They are used in ceremonies, prayers, and remembrances of loved ones, further adding to their popularity and timeless appeal.
Overall, candles offer a unique combination of practicality, aesthetics, and emotional resonance, making them popular for everyday use and special occasions.
Conclusion:
Incorporating candles into our sleep routine can be a beneficial and soothing practice that promotes restful sleep.
A candle’s soft, flickering light creates a calm and serene atmosphere, helping to relax the mind and body before bedtime. The gentle glow of a candle can also help reduce exposure to harsh artificial lighting, such as blue light from electronic devices, which can disrupt our natural sleep-wake cycle.
Additionally, scented candles infused with calming fragrances like lavender or chamomile can enhance the sleep-inducing effect by creating a soothing and aromatic ambience.
However, it is essential to prioritise safety when using candles, ensuring they are placed in a secure holder and never left unattended.
When used mindfully and safely, candles can be a delightful and effective tool for enhancing the sleep experience and promoting a more peaceful and rejuvenating night’s rest.

The Best Rollerball Perfumes
This year (2023), the perfume industry has become famous for rollerball fragrances. Women especially like to spritz perfume from their handbags throughout the day. With some perfume bottles often too bulky to carry in a bag, the next best thing is a rollerball perfume. Let’s take a look at the best rollerball perfumes.
What are rollerball perfumes?
Rollerball perfumes, also known as roll-on perfumes, are a convenient and portable form of fragrance application. They typically come in small bottles with a rollerball applicator on top, allowing you to easily apply the perfume to your pulse points or desired areas.
The rollerball design offers several advantages. It allows for precise application, as you can control the amount of perfume you apply without wasting any.
The small size makes it easy to carry in your purse or pocket, perfect for travel or on-the-go touch-ups. Rollerball perfumes also have a longer lifespan than spray perfumes, as they are less exposed to air and, therefore, less likely to oxidise.
Many perfume brands offer rollerball versions of their popular fragrances, allowing you to sample or carry your favourite scents without committing to a full-size bottle.
They are available in a wide range of fragrances, from floral and fruity to woody and oriental, catering to different preferences.
To apply a rollerball perfume, roll the ball onto your pulse points, such as your wrists, neck, or behind your ears. These areas generate heat and help release the fragrance throughout the day.
Remember, a little goes a long way, so start with a small amount and add more if desired. Rollerball perfumes can be a great addition to your fragrance collection, offering convenience and versatility.

Are rollerball perfumes worth buying?
I would say absolutely, yes. Especially if you travel and don’t want the liquid restrictions at the airport, or don’t want to carry a bulky bottle of perfume to work or out for an evening.
Rollerball versus spray perfume
We tend to get a more intense fragrance concentration with a rollerball than with our traditional sprays. Unlike the spray bottle, the rollerball provides a more direct application, so it is ideal if you are in an area where spraying a perfume bottle will impact those around you.
Have you ever been sitting in a restaurant, and the woman at the following table has finished her meal before you, and she gets out her favourite scent and sprays it before she leaves? It’s unpleasant, and I don’t understand why women don’t wait until outside to spritz. Nobody else wants to smell your fragrance to that extent.
Are they value for money? Well, with your traditional spray perfume, you get more product in the bottle. You could use less of the rollerball perfume because it is a couple of rolls on the skin, and you’re done.
Like perfume, the rollerball activates when it hits your skin and then evaporates throughout the day to release its fragrance. Compared to the rollerball version, we lose a certain amount of spray perfume each time we spray it on our wrists or necks.
A great way to test for yourself which will last the longest would be to buy the same size rollerball as your perfume bottle, note when you first started spraying or rolling, and see which one lasts the longest.
The same rule applies to storing your rollerball perfume. Please keep it in a cool and dry place, away from light or exposure to heat, as you would with your spray and perfume. Doing so will prevent your scent from degrading.
Rollerball perfume is applied in the same areas as your spray version, so pulse points on your wrists and neck are widespread. You can also place the rollerball behind your ears.
Applying your fragrance is much easier with a rollerball than with a spray perfume bottle. Try not to rub your wrists together. As this breaks the fragrance, rolling the ball across your skin is a simple application until the scent comes through.
Remember that everyone’s skin is different, so the scent of the product you send that smells good on your friend or family member may not necessarily smell as good on you. So, it’s always good to try a sample first.
Rollerball fragrances will last longer on the skin if the skin is clean and moisturised.
