Why wear perfume? Why do women and men wear fragrances? I know several friends who don’t use fragrance. Some are allergic to certain fragrances, and some don’t feel the need to spray perfume (and these are the ones who also don’t wear makeup; perhaps there’s a connection?).

All fragrances have a shelf life, and we can usually get away with a couple of years before our favourite perfume starts to smell ‘off’ and turns a different colour. This process is due to the fragrance becoming oxidised, and the molecules in the bottle will break down, eventually affecting the scent.
It can be a costly process if your favourite fragrance sits on the shelf. Exposing a perfume bottle to direct sunlight and not keeping it in a dark place or inside its box can have an impact. It might look elegant to show off your designer bottles, but you will accelerate the molecules’ breaking down and won’t get a long shelf life for your favourites, and this is painful if you’re spending £80-£100 on a bottle.
How to Store Your Perfume for Maximum Longevity
Some notes within the fragrance family are less likely to oxidise, and those with a high alcohol content are amber, leather, and woody notes. An iconic creation by Coco Chanel Chanel’s mother worked as a laundry woman on rural farms, and when her mother passed away, Chanel went to a Cistercian convent at Aubazine. Her father, on the other hand, was a market stallholder.

Chanel was very conscious about cleanliness, and when she worked with other mistresses of the rich, she often complained about their odour. The combination of body odours and musk was not a pleasant one.
She faced challenges finding someone to commission her creation with this new fragrance, and in the 1920s, creating a fresh fragrance often involved using lemon, orange, citrus, and bergamot fragrances.
These scents were fresh-smelling, a perfect combination for a ladies’ fragrance, but they didn’t last very well when applied to the skin. Finding a scent that lasts throughout the day is a common quest. During the summer of 1920, while on holiday with her lover, Chanel heard of a perfumer who could help her create the perfect perfume. It seemed like the ideal solution.
