    Christmas incense sticks

December is a wonderful time of year that brings families together, crackling fires and gorgeous aromas in the home.

Christmas incense sticks are just as popular as scented candles and there are some beautiful scents to choose from as we head into a favourite time of year for many.

Whilst incense sticks give off a lovely variety of scents, it’s important to know that they are not as good for those who suffer with respiratory issues so just be mindful when purchasing.

The smoke that comes off of an incense stick can aggravate the chest so if, like myself, you are asthmatic, you are best to avoid these and have scented candles or reed diffusers in the home instead.

What are incense sticks made from?

Incense sticks are made of a variety of materials that include bamboo, wood and herbs.
Depending on the type of material used will determine how well and efficient it burns. Bamboo is a popular choice as it burns slowly and evenly.
Those that contain a strong scent are made from resins and herbs. For a more subtle and delicate scent in the home, choose ones that are made from wood or bamboo.
Incense sticks burn more quickly than a candle and therefore you will use more but they do tend to be cheaper to purchase than you average candle so you won’t mind burning a few throughout the day.
If you buy good quality ones, the burn time will vary from 30 to 60 minutes. Some may even last for up to 2 hours.
Incense sticks do have a stronger scent than the cones that are available on the market and will produce more smoke.
They are super easy to use, being lit directly with a naked flame. Once lit, a gentle blow of the flame to extinguish it and the stick will begin to burn with a delicate glow.
A suitable holder is just as important as the sticks themselves. They need to fit for purpose without the stick, falling over and able to catch the falling ash as it burns.

    Safely first

The same rule applies with lit candles. It is important to place the incense stick in a safe place where there are no droughts, out of the reach of young children and pets and somewhere safe that they won’t be accidentally knocked over.

The benefits of burning incense sticks

Just like candles, wax melts and reed diffusers, there are great benefits if using incense sticks and not just for making the home smell warm and welcoming.
    Christmas incense sticks
    Relaxing
After a long day at work, a suitable scent can relieve the stresses of the day.
    Improve mental and physical well-being
A great way to clear negative energy, the scented fragrances will fill the room as soon as it is lit.
    Bring back memories
Similar to scented candles, burning an incense stick can bring back wonderful memories as we experience the scent.
    A restful nights sleep
If you suffer with insomnia then lavender is known for it’s relaxing properties and will aid in a restful nights sleep.
Far safer than lighting a candle too, if you happen to fall asleep whilst it’s still burning.
The essential oils that are used in sticks can assist in improving the air around you and therefore they are a popular choice for those in the therapeutic industry.
If you have ever booked for a massage, you will notice the soft lighting, candles lit and perhaps an incense stick burning.
They are also a popular choice for places that practice yoga, to help relax the body and mind and deepen concentration during meditation.
Instructors are mindful of what scents to burn when they use sticks in their classes and will use natural materials and delicate scents that won’t distract from the activity.
Many religious settings will burn incense sticks to create a calming and spiritual atmosphere and Christmas time will see a bigger influx in their use.

    A suitable Christmas gift

Sometimes we may struggle to buy a suitable gift for someone, so by purchasing a candle or an incense stick, this gives the perfect opportunity to give an item that we know is most likely to be used instead of put away inside the cupboard.

They are great value for money and will suit any room in the home.

There are some beautiful incense sticks holders that also come with your purchase of incense sticks and some lovely ones for Christmas time.

With the fragrances of Christmas to bring the festive season into your home and sparkling stick holders, eBay never let customers down with their variety.

You can also buy the holders separately if you want a sturdier incense stick base and some are designed to hold additional sticks for storage.

    Christmas candle holders

For many of us, candles are lit all year round, whether it’s in the garden during BBQ season or for adding extra comfort and warmth during the winter months.

Cosy lit fires, candles burning and the tree lit up in all its glory, brings the magic of Christmas to life for families all over the world.

During the festive season, we see lots of candles on sale, from tea lights to large pillar candles. They come in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes to suit all.

The one thing that I have noticed when I’ve been shopping for candles is that some of them don’t always come with their own holder.

We know that candles such as Yankee are already contained in their own glass jar and some of the smaller candles may come in a suitable jar that can be reused after.

    Christmas candle holders

What about those that need to sit in a holder before they’re lit?

    Christmas candle holders

As previously discussed in my article flameless candles, we also see candle pots, pillar, floating and jar candles that do come with their own container.

Choosing ones that don’t already come molded inside their own container means that we need to shop for suitable jars and trays to safely be able to light the candle.

At Christmas, we usually see the table decorations set out with table runners and centre piece candles to bring the festivities into the home and there are some lovely ideas online to choose from.

Companies have become very creative and there are some unusual styles available to purchase.

Tea lights are hugely popular and are possibly the most affordable.

They come as either batter operated (flameless) or lit candles and you can either have single holders or a larger centre piece where the holder with sit several tea lights at one time.

They also come in a couple of different colours and scents to suit your own personal choice.

Their particular styles really do bring a warmth and magical feeling into the home during the festive period.

Some will be decorated in a Christmas theme and there are some that have the days of December engraved on them so that you burn a section each day as Christmas nears.

These are called advent candles and are non drip, tapered candles that have a burn time of 12 hours.

    Stainless steel lantern candle holder

These are one of my favourites for the elegance they bring into the home and are most suited for the pillar candles.

They come in a variety of sizes depending on where you want them in the home and give off a good amount of light due to their size.

The very large ones are suitable for sitting in floor space perhaps by a fire for that extra feel of coziness.

This style is also suitable to use outside on the patio during the summer months, or in the winter for the extra light on a cold evening.

They come with a carry handle so that you could hang them from a hook off the garden fence and also makes it easier to transport them from one area to another.

    The benefits of incense sticks

Everyone loves a scent in their home and the benefits of incense sticks are as popular as ever as we take a look into why we use them during our every day lives.

People have been using incense sticks as far back as 2345 BC and were first used by the Egyptians.

They were originally used for religious purposes and have continued to be in use today for healing, bringing memories to life, help relax and keep us calm as well as for concentration with meditation and yoga.

There are so many uses for them today and they have stayed as a popular home product ever since their first introduction.

    The benefits of incense sticks

Those who use them for meditation, use them as a focal point similar to those who use their breathing to focus on.

Meditation is a spiritual activity which began in India.

Burning an incense stick gives the person something to focus on. The opportunity to switch off in the same way to those who practice yoga.

It takes us to another place for that moment in time, where everything else that runs through the mind is pushed aside whilst our mind focuses on breathing techniques and the scent surrounding us.

In order to practice good yoga and meditation, the mind needs to switch off so by burning an incense stick, this allows the mind to do just that and give a different focal point.

They were originally made with natural plants and materials which were classed as medicinal.

Some will help to clear a headache, improve the immune system with their antibacterial properties and some can help to heal scars, pimples and acne.

Burning your favourite scent can also help to relieve stress and anxiety.

    The benefits of incense sticks

We are surrounded by every day stresses and worries so with the help of incense sticks giving off a calm and aromatic scent, this can help reduce the anxiety we may be feeling.

    Happy and creative vibes

Another reason why people may use them is to help with creativity. Those such as Artists may use them to help bring out their creative side.

The sticks also help to bring out happiness and peace and to help stimulate the mind to be more creative.

    The benefits of incense sticks
Artists may use incense sticks to keep them in a tranquil place whilst they paint

Just like wearing your favourite perfume, having a favourable scent around you will ensure that happy vibes are at the forefront of your mind.

No one ever feels in a bad mood when they are surrounded by their favourite scent.

    Deodorizing the home

One of the most common reasons why people burn them is to deodorize their homes.

    The benefits of incense sticks
Remove odours and pet smells by lighting an incense stick to waft a scent through the home

    The benefits of incense sticks

The smell of pet fur, stale food or rubbish bins can linger and give an unpleasant smell throughout the home.

Read our hoover fragrances post for another way to eliminate bad odours in the home.

By burning an incense stick, this gives off a more pleasant smell to mask any unwanted scents around us.

They can also work well outdoors to keep insects away.

Pesky insects don’t like strong smells, especially popular ones such as lavender and citronella, that are suggested for keeping them at bay.

These particular scents work well when burning them as candles too. Stores sell candles that can be used outside to keep insects away from your food during the summer months.

If you have trouble sleeping, apart from using a pillow mist spray, which helps to switch you off from every day thoughts and relax you, incense sticks can also be used. Make sure you put out the stick safely before you sleep.

The aromatherapy scents work the best to calm the mind and aid a restful nights sleep.

    Retreat spa

Have you ever been to a massage retreat spa? There will often be an incense stick burning in the room whilst you have a massage.

This helps you to focus on the fragrance of the scent and switch off the mind. By having your mind in a relaxed state, this helps the body to relax and therefore your body will benefit much more from the massage.

    Using incense sticks safely

Be extra careful when purchasing incense sticks as some are full of chemicals. Choose brands that are non-toxic and try to find ones that are scented naturally rather than ones that use chemical fragrances.

If you choose ones that have no core, these will have a more natural aroma and won’t smell of burning wood, away from any draft caused by open doors or windows. Keep away from curtains too.

They are very easy to use. Light the end with a match or a lighter and hold for around 10 seconds. Just long enough for the stick to ignite.

The flame more often than not will extinguish on its own. An average burning time will be around 20-30 minutes, depending on their size and thickness.

If you wish to put the stick out before it has fully burnt away, then you can dip the ignited end into water.

Incense sticks do produce a lot of smoke when they burn so make sure you them in a ventilated room.

    The benefits of incense sticks
Make sure you have a suitable container for the falling ash

Be mindful that the smoke burning from an incense stick is a lung irritant, so try not to burn them too often or around those who have breathing conditions such as asthma.

    The importance of Chakra

Many of you I’m sure will have heard of chakra. An ancient word that means ‘wheel’ and refers to the spinning vortexes of the body’s natural energy system.

Recently I have learned that my chakra has weak energy and I was in fact absorbing energy from others as my chakra was closed.

When the body is exposed to stress or depression for example, the chakras will react and create an imbalance.

Ideally we need all of our chakras to be open which then promotes balance and frees up energy.

    The benefits of incense sticks

There are chakra incense sticks available on the eBay that have different scents and are great to use whilst practicing meditation or yoga.

One thing to bear in mind when using incense sticks, just like using candles, make sure you burn them in a safe environment.

Especially if you have pets or young children.

You can purchase the holders that fit an incense stick inside, to catch the falling ashes. Some are more suitable than others so shop around for the most suitable one.

Some of the most popular scents are sandalwood and this scent is used for its relaxing benefits.

Lavender and patchouli scents are great for aiding a restful sleep as they put you into a deeper relaxed state to help you unwind and fall asleep faster.

Depression is such a huge topic and those who do suffer will certainly benefit from a scent such a frankincense. This fragrance activates the ion channels that will then help alleviate anxiety and depression.

    The benefits of incense sticks

There are some incense sticks that help kill germs in the environment and those that have antibacterial properties will boost your health.

Scents such as cedar and sage are good for reducing negative energies and spirits from our surroundings.

Rose scent has been found to help and work as a mild painkiller. It can also help to lower the blood pressure and improve the mood.

There are so many benefits that we can use incense sticks for and they are an affordable accessory to buy from many online and in store retailers.

    Home perfume spray review

Working with a fragrance company has huge benefits. The chance to try new products and the latest one to reach FM World is their home perfume spray.

We all love our homes to smell fresh and clean without feeling like we have to bleach every hard surface or open all the windows just to let fresh air circulate.

That’s all well and good when we are enjoying the warmer weather but not practical for the winter months.

Having a clean home in every sense gives us a calm and relaxed mind.

Give your home a fresh scent of perfume mist

    The smell of freshness

With the added benefit of each room smelling like our favourite perfume without actually wasting a bottle of it, gives comfort alone.

We’ve previously discussed vacuum fresheners to make the home smell better but what do we use when the vacuum isn’t switched on?

There are many products on the market such as incense sticks, scented candles and reed diffusers that give a very subtle hint of fragrance over a few months or when lit but these don’t always provide an instant whiff of scent when we need it.

Scented candles work well if you’re planning to stay at home for the duration whilst it burns but we also need an instant scent that perhaps we can spray in the room before we head off to work.

We love the idea that our home can smell gorgeous as soon as we enter through the front door.

If you’re a pet owner and have the distinctive smell of wet fur lingering or stale smells embedded into the carpet, it’s embarrassing if a friend is following you straight into your home.

There’s no chance to quickly light a candle or wave the reed diffuser in the air in the hope that any slight scent will reach your guests nose.

With so many room sprays on the market, it can be difficult to find one to suit the individual.

Some don’t like the typical canned air fresheners that can be a little intoxicating when sprayed too much.

Products such as Febreze have been popular over the years and can be used on furniture. There are also the plug in types which work well but some need power to trigger a frequent spray and be plugged in continuously.

These come with refills which can be more cost effective but can still be a little overpowering to some.

    Bottle size– 250ml

    Price £28

    Rating out of 10– 9/10

Although each bottle isn’t the cheapest to purchase, you do get a lot of sprays out of them and it can last several weeks. This will depend also on how often it’s used and how many rooms are sprayed.

Personally, I only spray downstairs in my dining room and lounge, just as I’m leaving the home.

The kitchen is a place of cooking  and eating and doesn’t require a perfume scent, nor do the bedrooms.

Those rooms are perhaps more suited to a scented candle or  fragrance sticks.

It’s used every day in my home, sometimes a few times a day.

Once sprayed into the air just before leaving home, the scent definitely lingers in the room on your return.

There are many product sprays on the market so it can be difficult to choose which is the best one to suit the home.

If you’re a pet owner, care and thought needs to ensure that you don’t purchase a scent that is too strong and likely to get into the back of your pets throat.

Some sprays can linger onto furniture once they are sprayed so it’s recommended that you spray into the air to avoid spraying over the furniture.

  • Gifts,  Mother’s Day

    Mother’s Day gifts

Mothering Sunday falls on Sunday 27th March 2022 here in the UK and we have a selection of Mother’s Day gifts to suit all the mums out there.

Why do we celebrate Mother’s Day?

Around the world, many countries will celebrate Mother’s Day. A day to show all the mothers that we appreciate all the amazing things that they do.
A celebration of what being a mum means, the material bonds and motherhood.
Without our mothers, we wouldn’t be here today.
Even before a child is born, the connection that a mother has to her unborn child is unlike any other.
We have already started building the incredible bond way before the baby has arrived into the world.
Dating back to the 16th century, Mothering Sunday began its story as a Catholic and Protestant Christian holiday.
People would visit their ‘mother’ church, a church where they were baptized or attended when they were growing up. This was known as Laetare Sunday.
    The fourth Sunday of Lent.
Possibly the only day in the year when families could get together and children would stop off on their way to church to pick flowers and make a beautiful bouquet for their mothers.
    Mother’s Day gifts
A traditional gift for mothers is a bunch of beautiful flowers
This soon became a tradition and a way of giving gifts.
Such an iconic day seemed to fade out through the 20th century until the 1950s.
Businesses and wholesale trades saw a gap in the market and begun the huge lucrative trading opportunity that we see today. A way of making money from such an iconic event.

There are places around the world such as Canada, New Zealand and Mexico that celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday 10th May.

So quite some time after the UK. Children would make presents to give to their mothers.

    Perfume and beauty resources

    A day to show appreciation

Whatever date Mother’s Day is held around the world, the day symbolizes the same thing – to show mothers how much they are appreciated.
Of course, every day should be a day to show mothers how much we appreciate them and what they do.
    Mothers’s Day gifts
Having a special day to celebrate has very much become a tradition like many yearly events, such as Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day and Easter Sunday.

Traditionally, flowers are purchased but let’s take a look at some other lovely gift ideas that our mums will appreciate.

    Perfume

Perfume can be a hard gift to buy someone but when it comes to family, most of us know what type of fragrance our mum wears. If not, a quick sneak inside the wardrobe to check out what bottles she has sitting on the shelf will answer the question.

Why choose to buy perfume for a gift ?

Perfume has always been a great gift to give someone as it’s a personal item and we often wait for a bottle to be bought as a gift or a visit to the Duty Free shop rather than purchasing it for ourselves.

Fragrances can be costly so here are some alternatives to the designer labels. Read about FM

    Wax melts

Another great gift is a wax melt burner with perfumed cubes. These items make a lovely gift and if you’re looking for a room scent that has a long- lasting fragrance then wax melts are perfect. Safe to use, elegant and affordable.

New mothers in particular never get enough sleep. I remember the days all too well! Sometimes it can take forever to drift off even when you are feeling exhausted from lack of shut-eye.

A gentle spray of a pillow mist can help relax the mind, switch off from the day as you breathe in the calming fragrance notes and drift off for a peaceful nights sleep.

    Body balm

Everyone can make use of a body lotion and a scented one is even better.

Our skin is prone to dryness during the summer with the high temperatures as well as in the winter when the temperature drops outside and we have the heating on indoors.

Its good practice to moisturise after a bath or shower as the hot water can dry the skin as well.

An added benefit of having moisturized skin is that your perfume/ cologne will last much longer too. Skin preparation has so many benefits.

    Shower gel

Every mum deserves a shower gel to make her skin feel soft, moisturized and revitalised after a long day.

Cooking, household chores and family errands can leave the skin feeling tight and dry.

    Foot peel

Mums spend a lot of time on their feet so what better way to treat her than with an exfoliating foot peel.

This clever product helps to regenerate damaged epidermis, moisturizes and rebuilds the skin.

It effectively removes calluses, contains extracts of honey, pear, passion, lemon, fruit, pineapple, grape and opuntia.

If she uses it once a month, mum will notice beautifully soft skin and summer-ready feet for the warmer season.

    Home fragrance mist

Along with candles for the home, another product that has become popular of late is the home fragrance mist.

    Fragrance mist

Air fresheners have been around for many years, and are still on the market today but more people are moving towards a more modern approach.

When it comes to making the home smell fresh and clean, every homeowner reached for the can of air freshener, hidden in the kitchen cupboard.

They did what they were meant to do but they would often leave a coating of spray across the furniture due to their heaviness.

If you happen to have allergies, these sprays felt toxic when they hit the back of the throat after being sprayed.

The trick was to spray the room frantically and then run out or close the door behind you!

Creating a home atmosphere with a mist

These days, there are more delicate and kinder sprays on the market.

Ones that give off a mist as opposed to a full-blown white foam of spray that the old style air fresheners produce.

As the years moved on, so did the design of air freshers.

Shops and supermarkets started to sell plug-in air fresheners and automatic spray holders.

    The plug-ins worked well.

Febreze products have been popular for many years and come in a variety of scents.

Although after a time you could no longer smell the fragrance until you left the house and returned some time later.

Then came along the automatic refill containers.

Some were programmed to automatically activate every time someone walked past which seemed a good idea unless you walked too close or past too often.

Some had a switch that you could set to how you wanted it to spray the room. A much better idea when you can adjust the timing of the spray.

Either way, they were a good choice although often a pricier option and required batteries to work.

    Fragrance mist

Nowadays, we see a popularity in the fragrance mists.
Many companies sell them and they have become a better alternative that the canned air fresheners.
Of course, modern sprays and unique fragrances come with a cost. More expensive than the old style cans of air fresher.
Somehow, they seemed to last longer though. Maybe we are more careful with how much we spray.
Or perhaps the latest trend in room fragrances are more concentrated so there is no need to spray half a bottle just for one room.
Pet owners and smokers would surely be grateful for this.

    Air freshener and room fragrance

So what makes a fragrance mist different from an air freshener?

Home fragrance mists are a low concentration perfume.

They make a great alternative to give any room a delicate fragrance.

A safe option too, for candle lovers who have to be mindful of when they light the wick.

Having pets and small children around the home isn’t an ideal setting for your favourite candle to burn away.

Room fragrances are a quick fix to refresh the room, perhaps after cooking or to eliminate pet smells.

We can all clean to the best of our ability but there is something great about having a clean home that also smells divine.

A great alternative too if you only want a hint of scent rather than a stronger fragrance from a candle.

    Candle scents in the hom

Candle scents are stronger and linger more and you can’t carry one around with you like a small bottle of your favourite mist.

With the handle travel sprays that you can pick up cheaply in many shops, it’s simple to decant a small amount into a spray bottle and pop in your handbag.

As the market in perfumes has progressed, we start to see that companies sell fragrance mists in the same scent as your designer perfume.

Not only do you smell gorgeous with your perfume spray but your home could smell of the same scent.

Some fragrance mists on the market have extra qualities.

Helping to calm the senses and give off a relaxing vibe.

With a wide range of products, the choice is yours.

    Home scented candles
Candles are so pretty and classy these days

Winter time was always the best time for home candles and they really do make any home feel and look cosy when they’re lit in every room.

I would often buy tea light candles to brighten up a room and these were usually unscented and very cost effective.

Over the years, products have moved on and scented candles were introduced. Some would come as tea light candles but the most popular were the larger type that had a long burning time.

    Scented candle products

Scented candles are a great way to bring any room to life with a fragrance and are often a better choice than the air freshener sprays that we see on the shelves in supermarkets.

Canned air fresheners can often be too heavy and strong in their scent.

Either leave a coating that would settle on the furnature or the spray would hit the back of the throat as you walked in the room.

Not a pleasant feeling and if you are unfortunate to suffer from allergies like myself, they were best avoided.

Christmas time seemed a popular time to purchase candles especially if buying someone a candle as a gift.

There really are some beautiful candle designs in the shops and online.

It seemed worth spending a bit of money on such a luxury candle.

Nowadays, there are more affordable candles on the market and they still have a long burning time.

Alongside candles, we also have the opportunity to purchase fragrance sticks.

Small containers of perfume oil with reed defuser sticks that would also give off a gentle fragrance in your chosen room.

    Home fragrances perfumes
Reed diffusers have also become a popular household fragrance

The added bonus that these could be left unattended, unlike candles that can’t be left to burn if no one is home.

    Scented Reed tip

A great tip is to rotate the reed defuser sticks once a week.

The fragrance already on the sticks that are soaked into the oil, will then have the chance to give the room an extra hint of scent when rotated.

Candles and fragrance sticks look elegant in any home and come in a variety of sizes.

They make great presents and are long lasting. A great asset to a teenagers bedroom too!
