Imagine life without perfume: no lingering scents, no memories rushing back when you catch a whiff of the fragrance as you walk past someone and a world devoid of the delicate aroma of flowers and the captivating scents that envelop us.

I have loved perfume, especially floral scents, from an early age. I remember using flower petals as a child and mixing them with expensive perfume belonging to my late Mum without her knowing—those were great times until she caught me!

I quickly realised I could create my fragrances, even if it required mixing a few weeds with the petals to make a scented mixture, and I thought my creations were unique when I was about 9 or 10 years old.

I soon discovered, however, how fast I could run when my Mum found out what I had used. My Mum had a wonderful collection of expensive perfumes: I was convinced she never wore half.

The expensive bottles sat on her bedside table and inside her wardrobe for years. One day, I thought I would help her by using some for my creations.

She would appreciate my creativity, and there was a chance that she might have used the fragrances I created.

The 1970s and perfume

In the 1970s, during my childhood, petal pressing was a favoured activity among girls. My friends and I diligently filled albums with flattened flowers, and there was much excitement over who had pressed the most exotic flower. The neighbour’s gardens often suffered as we gathered blooms for our creations, but it was all part of our journey of growing up and exploring various perfume scents.

I grew up wearing perfume daily. It became part of my morning routine – a daily spritz to make me feel good before leaving the house, and it soon became a daily occurrence. Every day is special to us, so why not wear perfume even when nothing is planned? If it brings you joy, it’s the perfect excuse to wear a spritz of your favourite scent.

Fast forward to 2015, and at 43, I had the opportunity to work with a perfume company. I love the freedom we have today to choose what suits our skin type the best. Not everyone can wear the same perfume because our skin reacts differently.

Helping others choose their perfume

Having worked in the fragrance industry for the past eight years, I thoroughly enjoy helping others find the perfect fragrance for their skin. With such a wide array of fragrances available, we can choose one that suits daytime ear in the office or workplace and opt for a strong fragrance for a night out.

We all cherish the feeling of smelling gorgeous, and a fragrance that compliments our skin is like an added accessory to our outfit. Even when pottering around at home, wearing a daytime scent can still be delightful.

The benefits of not wearing fragrances

Reduced Sensory Overload Perfumes can be overwhelming for some individuals, especially those sensitive to strong scents. Living without perfume allows individuals to avoid sensory overload and enjoy a more subtle and natural environment. Alternative options are also available, including body lotions that give the skin a subtle scent.

Allergen Avoidance: Many perfumes contain synthetic chemicals that can trigger allergies and skin sensitivities in some people. By avoiding perfumes, individuals with fragrance allergies can minimise the risk of adverse reactions. I have friends who avoid wearing perfumes for this reason, and I now understand why. I have learned so much about how perfumes work that I can appreciate their choice.

Environmental Impact: The production and disposal of perfumes can contribute to environmental pollution. By choosing not to use perfumes, individuals can reduce their ecological footprint.

Authentic Personal Scent: Without the influence of external fragrances, natural body odour becomes more apparent. Some individuals prefer this authentic scent and find it appealing.

Cost Savings: High-quality perfumes can be expensive. Individuals can save money and allocate it to other priorities when choosing not to use them.
